The Most Rev. Paul Kwong: Newly Elected Archbishop of Hong Kong Sheung Kung Hui

4/15/2007
[Diocese of Hong Kong] The Most Rev. Peter Kwong, first Chinese bishop of the Diocese of Hong Kong Island, retired on December 31, 2006.  In his work in the Church for over forty years, he made great contributions to the Anglican Communion through-out the world as well as in the Church in Hong Kong.  In the Thanksgiving Service for his retirement, Archbishop Peter Kwong stated that on looking back on his life as a believer for over fifty years and as a teacher and pastor for over forty years, the greatest realization was God’s wonderful arrangement and direction in his life. As what was said in the bible: “I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees thee” (Job 42:5).  He said, “I have truly realized and under-stood that all this time God had actually been leading, organizing and sending me on the way I should go.” He prayed and sincerely hoped that the Chinese Church would be able to bring more blessing to the Church in general.

Archbishop Paul Kwong was consecrated bishop of the Diocese in March  25, 2006 Church of the Holy Apostles and the Primate of the Hong Kong Province on February 3, 2007. He was officially installed as the second Bishop of Hong Kong Island at St. John’s Cathedral on January 15, 2007. The installation ceremony was attended by over a thousand people including 130 attendees from all over the world as well as church leaders from China, with the ringing of bells and applause of the people.

The Most Rev. Paul Kwong voiced his thankfulness to Archbishop Peter Kwong for his support and the love and support of colleagues and parishioners. He asserted that he would build on the foundation of the work done in the past to improve ministry in training so that both lay and ordained ministers would be able to strengthen the faith in the community. Secondly, he would consolidate the Diocesan and evangelical work, reorganizing the use and deployment of both human and material resources, encourage the co-operation and communication among the parishes in order to grow and develop together.
