Resettlement

"The foreigner who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the foreigner as yourself" (Leviticus 19:34).

EMM is one of ten agencies that hold agreements with the U.S. Department of State to receive refugees from various parts of the world. Resettlement, while subsidized by federal funding, is made possible by generous financial support from the Episcopal Church, numerous parishes and countless volunteers in various parts of our network of 33 sites covering 27 diocesan programs. The EMM network is the vital component of our resettlement program which translates our goals and objectives into direct service to refugee clients.

Through this affiliate network, EMM helps refugees transition to life in the United States and begin their journey to a new life. Besides providing new arrivals with initial housing and other basic necessities, we help our clients regain self-sufficiency by assisting them in learning English, enrolling their children in school, finding employment, and accessing health care and other needed services.

Our tradition as an Easter people takes on special meaning in this resettlement ministry. Helping traumatized and vulnerable refugees start new lives of hope, freedom and dignity is a powerful witness to the spirit of resurrection. The motto of refugee resettlement could well be "from death to resurrection."

Resettlement is supported by an initial reception and placement grant from the Department of State, often augmented by funds provided by the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) which make possible a range of social and employment services to refugees. “Matching Grant” is one such program which encourages EMM affiliates to match federal funds with private resources, from churches and other institutions, and, in the process, earn additional federal dollars which can enhance the ability of the affiliate to serve refugees.
