ERD's ongoing response to Pakistan Earthquake

10/21/2005
  [Episcopal Relief and Development]

Episcopal Relief and Development is providing emergency assistance to people devastated by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in Pakistan and India. The death toll has risen to over 47,000 and continues to climb. Government officials in Pakistan say the number could reach 80,000.

ERD is providing food, shelter materials, and medical supplies for affected families through efforts coordinated by the Dioceses of Peshawar, Sialkot, and Lahore. Sixteen hundred families are receiving food supplies in the affected areas of Azad Kashmir. The supplies include wheat, flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar, tea leaves, and matches. Using Gari Habibullah as a medical base, the first medical team from the Mission Hospital of the Diocese of Peshawar is addressing unmet needs in villages throughout the Northwest Frontier Province.

Our assistance is also supplying shelter kits, including items such as tent and plastic sheeting to 15,000 families. In the hard-hit region of Mansehra, 70 percent of the area was destroyed.  Mobile medical personnel are administering tetanus shots to those in need.

Officers of the Provincial Office of the Church of Pakistan are meeting with government officials to determine additional locations in need of assistance.

“The medical team from the Diocese of Peshawar is aiding earthquake victims in small villages by giving medical attention and relief supplies. ERD remains committed to providing crucial aid to survivors who, after being devastated by the earthquake, are now at great risk with the approach of winter,” said Abagail Nelson, ERD’s Vice President for Program.

Please continue to pray for people impacted by the earthquake in South Asia.
