ENGLAND: Christian and Muslim leaders meet at Lambeth Palace

[Lambeth Palace] Christian and Muslim leaders from traditions across the Muslim world and the United Kingdom met at Lambeth Palace July 4 to exchange ideas on the subjects of "Living as a Religious Minority" and "Religious Reform & Pluralism."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, sent a message of welcome. "I warmly welcome and commend the friendship and partnership between the Church and the Al Khoei Foundation which have made this important event possible."

Speakers included Ayatullah Nasseri and Dr. Ali Allawi from Iraq, Ayatullah Milani and Thomas McElwain, a scholar of both the Bible and the Quran, and Huda Jawad from the organisation Forward Thinking. These Muslim scholars were joined by the Rev. Martin Seeley, principal of Westcott House, Cambridge; Dr. Phil Lewis of Bradford Churches for Dialogue and Diversity; the Rev. Canon Flora Winfield, international secretary of Churches Together in Britain & Ireland; and Dr. Suha Rassam, author of "Christianity in Iraq."

The dialogue was followed by an evening reception at the al-Khoei Foundation. The speakers and participants were joined by the Rt. Hon. Hazel Blears, secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.
